This calf was hidden not far from the town of Gardiner. This calf was hidden not far from the town of Gardiner. Calves are born in May and June. Their spotted coats and reported lack of smell help protect them against predators. While they can walk within a hour of birth, they spend most of their first ten days bedded down and not moving between nursings. In spite of this, up to two-thirds of each year's calves are killed by predators. Elk calves weigh about thirty pounds at birth.
