This young female brown bear (Ursus arctos) sits in tall gras while the rains fall. Brown bears, including inland grizzlies, occur throughout most of Alaska. They also occur in Russia, northern China, northern Japan, western Canada and in limited areas of the northwest protion of the lower 48 States. While the same species, there are noticeable differences between brown bears and grizzly bears. Brown bears are miuch larger than the inland grizzlies because of the seasonally abundant spawning salmon, rich array of vegetation and the milder climate.
