A female black bear walks through the Tower Junction Area in the Spring. Females weigh 135 to 160 pounds. Black bears have shorter, more curved claws than grizzly bears and are adept at climbing trees. In Yellowstone about 50 per cent of black bears (Ursus americanus) are black in color. The rest are brown and cinnamon.
