This bison seems to be enjoying grazing on the succulent grasses in this pond. These places can be dangerous, however. Not far away are the carcasses of two bison who stepped into Backtail Pond and couldn't climb back out because it is much deeper than this little pond and it also has steep banks. Their carcasses later provided food for a variety of scavengers. I saw bears, wolves, at least one coyote, bald eagles and ravens at the carcasses.
