A bald eagle roosts on a snag in Homer, Alaska. The bald eagle, haliaeetus leucocephalus, exists only in North America. It is estimated that there are about 70,000 bald eagles of which 30,000 live in Alaska, 20,000 live in British Columbia, and the remaining 20,000 are scattered throughout the rest of North America.
