Brown Bears, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska

A sow with three spring cubs leaves the clamming flats of Cook Inlet and heads inland. Razor clams are an important part of a brown bear's diet in the Silver Salmon Creek area. Cubs are born in the den during January and February. Twins are most common, but litters can range from one to four. Cubs weigh one pound when born and up to 15 pounds when they emerge from the den in June.
